How about a story from my days at UC, Irvine? We wrote several "response stories" where the assignment was to read a famous short story, pick an element that interested you, and then write another story using that element. For Herman Melville's famous "Bartleby the Scrivener," I chose his famous line, "I'd rather not." It turns out, in a modern setting such a line can still cause an uproar.
